The USA were victorious winning the Gold Medal at the Paris Olympics after beating Brazil in a 1-0 victory. This is the 5th time that the US have won gold at the Olympics, and the 7th time they have won a medal. Pretty Impressive! Talking about impressive, this was manager Emma Hayes’s first major tournament with the team, and having only been manager for 10 matches… now she has a gold medal to her name.
Hearts were racing when Brazil scored first but it was called offside by the AR, but Mallory Swanson scored the gold medal winning goal for the US, this was Swanson’s 4th goal of the tournament. Tension was high as 10 minutes was added onto the end of the second half, with an amazing save by Naeher, the Brazilian keeper. Brazil’s Marta also came close to scoring in the 89th minute with a curled shot that ended up flying over the crossbar.
The Olympics was again another stage upon which to boost the profile of Womens football, and one player we will be watching for the future is Jaedyn Shaw, the youngest player in the winning US squad. Jaedyn previously set a record by scoring in her first FIVE starts for the US National Women’s Team and now has a Gold Medal to go with the many other accolades she is sure to capture as her career develops. At only 19 we will be watching her progress closely and hopefully for a long time to come!!
Also, I now have a photo of myself with a Gold Medal winning Olympian!!!! This was taken in Melbourne recently when Arsenal Women came to play in May…. we were lucky enough to meet Emily Fox at an open training session!
